![]() ![]() ![]() During the process, an innovative system was applied in the sector of construction of historical ship replicas, which combines construction in fiberglass and posterior covering in wood. The design includes the results of the new studies on the shapes of this famous vessel, in order to achieve greater maneuverability and better control of the steering. The work was carried out in the coastal town of Pinta Umbría (Huelva, Spain) over twelve months starting in January 2017 and ending in March 2018. This true-scale replica of the Santa María was built by Fundcacíon Nao Victoria, a Spanish institute that specializes in historic ships. The Santa María 525 project came about with the objective of reliving history in order to promote the heritage, tourism and culture of the province of Huelva, with the construction and development of one of its most recognizable symbols of identity. ![]() On August 3rd, 1492, it set sail from the port of Palos de la Frontera (Huelva, Spain) together with the caravels “Pinta” and “Niña”, and reached America on October 12th, 1492, causing an encounter between two worlds that had been unknown to each other until that point. The Santa Maria was the flagship with which Admiral Christopher Columbus carried out one of the most significant ocean crossings in history. I’ve added some image captions for a few of our personal reactions. The Santa Nina model ship is built on scale by the original plan, then drawn up and painted by actual photographs to ensure the best accuracy. The notes in this post come from the exhibit itself, and from a news report., timbers are after process step of pre-construction. Use high-quality wood such as rosewood, ebony, black wood, mahogany wood.Meticulously sewn sails, keep shape and do not wrinkle.Anchors, guns, decorations, and other intricate details sculpted of metal. This model ship is entirely handmade by skilled and experienced craftsmen, using the plank on frame construction method.Length about 15 meters, keel length 12 meters, beam 5 meters, and depth 2 meters. This would have made Niña the best of the three ships at sailing upwind. Unlike most ships of the period, Niña may have had four masts, including a small counter-mizzen at the stern with another lateen sail. When she left Spain she had lateen sails on all masts but she was refitted in the Canary Islands with square sails on the fore and main masts. The Niña was another caravel of probably 50 or 60 tons. Smallest of the fleet, captained by Vicente Añes Pinzón. A caravel had about twenty crew members, who slept on the deck and would go below only if the weather was bad. A carvel was square-rigged on its foremasts and mainmasts, but used a lateen sail on the mizzen to help in tacking. The Niña, the Pinta were caravels, with a shallower draft than a nao, did not have much cargo space, but were able to explore shallow bays and the mouths of rivers. ![]() But was able to carry a lot of cargo, and it was able to stand up well in bad weather. The Santa Maria was a nao, was a bit of a tub, and was not able to go near the coastline. His flagship, the Santa Maria had 52 men aboard while his other two ships, the Nina and Pinta were each crewed by 18 men. Columbus sailed from Palos de la Frontera on 3 August, 1492. Christopher Columbus had three ships on his first voyage, the Niña, the Pinta, and the Santa Maria. ![]()
